Senior Director feedback, Post 16 Education Support Company - International and National based.
Gary Nelson has been, and continues to be a 'critical friend' throughout the last ten years of my professional and personal journey from Director of Specialism, Assistant Headteacher, Assistant Principal and on to my current role as Director of Education working across 27 schools around the UK.
Gary has a powerful moral compass that does not vere from the direction of serving young people, He questions, probes and challenges, he is able to invoke a response deep within which then informs actions and practice. He is able to have difficult conversations within a collegiate environment that he has created. You feel completely at ease in honest and open conversation that is designed to be both highly challenging and supportive.
Gary is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced having served as a Headteacher and Senior Leader for well over twenty years in a multitude of settings. He has an understanding of complex theories of leadership and has the ability to break the theory down into accessible and directly relatable practice.
Gary is highly personable, intuitive and highly communicative. He has a 'mission' to improve the life chances of the young people in our schools and the staff and leaders at all levels who serve those students and our communities.
Gary has helped to shape my pedagogy and to define my own 'purpose' or 'treasure' as he often refers to it. He has been a personal mentor and, over time, a friend who can be a force for positive change in all people he works with. In a world of AI Gary is a man who, through his insight, passion and commitment to individual and collective improvement can change people, schools and places.
I cannot thank him enough for what he has done for me and I commend him to any institution who have the ambition to be collectively and individually better. March 2026.
